Tide’s in!

My lateset JGarrett EP ‘Tidal Zone’ on Super 6 records is now available and it’s been getting some love from the promo circuit. This EP contains four tracks of Dubby/Acidic Techno with heavy shades of Motor City Techno. For me, this is the sound of a still summer evening in a zone between the intersection of Mack and Woodward and a Pacific beach watching the sun go down over the water.

Movement in hindsight.

Wow, what a bunch of weeks. I went to Detroit for Movement 2011 (and about a week ahead of time to see family and friends)… I’ve been back for a little over a week and it feels like I’m still in re-entry… or resurfacing.

So… where to begin? Movement was amazing. I met up with a bunch of old friends and got to hear some great music. We stayed about three blocks from the festival at the Courtyard Marriott (across from the RenCen) along with a bunch of the festival goers and artists. This year my room faced Jefferson toward Woodward, so I awoke each morning to the festival soundcheck, which was actually pretty cool. One morning at 9am they started blaring the Imperial March from Star Wars. Good stuff. It was also fun to see what people were sharing on iTunes on the hotel’s WiFi… Dubfire has a lot of television shows in his playlist. Particularly “Walking Dead” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Impressions of the festival… The acts and music that stuck out for me were Monolake, Green Velvet, Sven Väth, Marc Houle, Mark Flash, Michael Geiger, Dubfire, Erika, and the guy who capped and owned the festival was Claude Young. His selection, mix, and energy took it right back to 1993… I felt like I was transported through time. It was amazing. If you look for it, you can find a recording of his set posted on Megaupload.com somewhere. It’s a bit overdriven, but it’s worth snagging.

So in another year I’ll be able to go back and get my Vernor’s and bump cake happening again.  I’m sure I’ll book my flights again in the next couple months and hit up the Courtyard Marriott website for reservations as soon as they start taking them. It’s become an annual tradition by now for me.
